Food Inspector 1 or Trainee
The Division of Food Safety and Inspection is implementing a more robust animal feed and pet food inspection unit to incorporate an enhanced inspection program as we move toward the adoption of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Animal Feed rule. This program will be designed to monitor compliance with established standards through inspections and sampling activities as a mechanism to minimize potential hazards, and the incumbent will be work on creating the necessary policies and procedures and educating the establishments on this implementation. Specific duties will include, but not be limited to:
o Conducting food safety inspections of animal food establishments to ensure sanitary, wholesome, and pure food in accordance with applicable laws and regulations; o Prevent fraud, adulteration and misrepresentation in the processing, packaging, storage, distribution, and sale of animal feed and food products by educating food establishment operators on applicable laws and regulations; o Sampling food products to verify food safety controls, product labeling, and contents, conduct complaint investigations; o Issuing written notices, letters, and reports citing food establishment violations and enforcement actions; o Perform the regulatory and enforcement functions of the animal feed inspection program; and o Provide effective and uniform administration of the laws and rules within the agency's jurisdiction.

If there is no appropriate eligible list of at least three people willing to accept permanent appointment for this geographic location, the Department may nominate a qualified person for a provisional appointment under the provisions of Section 65 of the Civil Service Law. Full-time professional experience in a position in which the primary responsibility involves the application of scientific techniques in the areas of environmental health protection and sanitation of food establishments or quality control of food products at a wholesale food manufacturing facility may be substituted for a maximum of 60 college credits at the rate of one year experience equaling thirty semester credit hours. Advanced Placement:
If you are selected for appointment, you may, at the agency's discretion, be appointed directly to Food Inspector Trainee 2 or Food Inspector 1. To be considered for advanced placement to Food Inspector Trainee 2, you must possess, beyond the Minimum Qualifications, one additional year of experience in which the primary responsibility involves the application of scientific techniques in the areas of environmental health protection and sanitation of food establishments or quality control of food products at a wholesale food manufacturing facility. Food Service Worker, Restaurant or Food Store Manager, Chef, Butcher, Caterer, Food Warehouse Management or Foremen, Food or Beverage Comptroller, Banquet Manager, Steward, Food or Food and Sanitation Equipment Salesperson, Food Broker, or Pesticide Applicator. Candidates appointed provisionally must take the next scheduled Civil Service examination for this title, and their score must be reachable on the resulting eligible list before they can be permanently appointed. Candidates who do not pass the examination or achieve a reachable score may not be retained. Transfer Qualification:

1. To a Food Inspector Trainee 1, you must have one year of permanent, competitive, or 55-b/c service as a Farm Products Grading Inspector 1, or; 2. To a Food Inspector Trainee 2, you must have one year of permanent, competitive, or 55-b/c service as a Farm Products Grading Inspector 2, or; 3. To a Food Inspector 1, You must have one year of permanent, competitive, or 55-b/c service as a Dairy Products Specialist 1. Transfer Qualification:

You must have permanent service in a title within two salary grades or one management/confidential grade and have served permanently for one year in that title.
