Duties of the position include but are not limited to:
The incumbent serves as a Federal police officer working for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) performing law enforcement and security duties pursuant to Title 38 USC 902. In addition to performing all the duties and responsibilities of a police officer which includes:
performing a full range of police duties by following and executing rules, regulations, or procedures covering law and rules enforcement, physical and personal security operations, patrol duties, control desk duty, coordination with local courts, and/or crime prevention activities for the local jurisdiction; patroling VA facilities, identifying situations where criminal activity has occurred or is about to occur, assessing danger and threats, and taking proper recourse, the incumbent will serve as an instructor.Some of the major duties and responsibilities of the Police Officer (Instructor) include:
as Police Instructor, the incumbent performs instructor duties that total a minimum of 15 hours per week. The incumbent reviews centrally mandated curriculum for firearms and tactical training that requires local lesson plan development and delivery. The incumbent schedules training and prepares areas for training, equipment and supporting training materials. They deliver both live training and dynamic simulation training to build basic and advanced skills on a progressive schedule to police service staff. The incumbent has the duty of certifying agency officers on the use of the approved equipment, and the obligation to recertify an officer's qualification based on training performance. The Police Firearms Instructor plans, develops and/or delivers training curriculum that builds basic and advanced skills in firearms, operations and tactics, including responses to active threat events. Additionally, the Police Instructor maintains and assumes accountability for firearms, and serves as an armorer. The instructor troubleshoots the weapons system when failures present and makes necessary repairs or replaces parts. The instructor orders and monitors an inventory of parts in order to keep the equipment in service and duty ready. The instructor provides daily oversight to weapons turn in and out processes and the associated accountability documentation. S/he completes monthly inspections, annual detailed maintenance and a files system of historical documents related to maintenance of equipment. The incumbent serves as the primary point of contact for other federal agencies regarding training facility agreements, cross training, and developing new courses of instruction. They attend mandated refresher training and advanced training as needed. In the event of a firearm related event the instructor conducts a use of force review and submits it to the Chief of Police service, providing findings and recommendations. The Firearms Instructor serves as a Field Training Officer (FTO) on their assigned squad of officers, providing expert level guidance and on the spot direction to less experienced officers during performance of duties.As a Ground Defense and Recovery (GDR) Instructor, the incumbent will participate in the development of the annual training plan for the VA Police Service GDR program, which provides officers with a means to protect themselves and retain their weapon(s), during physical confrontations on the ground. This necessitates the development, planning and delivery of blocks of instruction as required to Police Service personnel that is based on guidance in the VA Law Enforcement Training Center Defense Tactics and Training Unit and Ground Defense and Recovery appropriate VA regulations.Must obtain and maintain Law Enforcement Training Center certification as a Firearms Instructor, Active Threat Response Instructor, Ground Defense and Recovery / Defense Tactics Instructor Work Schedule:

Physical Requirements:
The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion, long hours of standing, walking, driving and similar activities. The incumbent must respond to alarms, pursue suspects, participate in training activities, climb stairs and walk during assigned foot patrols in and around large building, campus, and other physical settings. Agility, dexterity and strength are needed to pursue, apprehend and detain uncooperative suspects. On a regular and recurring basis the work requires strenuous exertion physically restraining disorderly individuals to prevent harm to others or the individual.Incumbents must be physically able to lift or carry injured or hurt persons, evacuate persons to safety during storms, disasters, fires or other emergencies.The incumbent is expected to maintain a high standard of physical fitness and hand and eye coordination in order to maintain his or her semi-annual qualification with his or her assigned firearm and annual qualification with his or her assigned departmental issued intermediateweapons. Strenuous physical exertion is also required during many required and recurring training activities such as those related to weapons training, Active Threat Response training and Ground Defense and Recovery training.The Police Instructor delivering training works on outdoor and indoor firearm ranges, standing and maintaining alertness for 12 hours scheduled training days. As a GDR instructor, the incumbent must deliver classes in a hand on gym environment, often performing physically demanding tasks repeatedly to demonstrate to students until they grasp the technical aspects of the discipline. Experience:
You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-06 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
experience which provided knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques and involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property; conducting routine foot and/or vehicle patrols; responding to routine and emergency calls for police assistance; issuing traffic citations; questioning individuals at the scene of a crime; informing individuals about their rights as suspects; subduing unruly individuals; and preparing written reports involving criminal and/or civil offenses. You must possess knowledge of applicable laws of the Federal, state, county, or municipal government, possess arrest authority and have the ability to use a firearm. In addition, you must have sufficient knowledge to prevent and/or resolve criminal offenses at the scene; conducting preliminary investigations at a crime scene; pursuing and apprehending persons fleeing from a crime scene or resisting arrest; providing testimony in court; taking charge of a crime or accident scene; and interviewing witnesses of a crime or accident. Examples of creditable service include work on a police force, through service as a military police officer; or performing criminal investigative duties. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
